Chiropractic FAQs

Before visiting a chiropractor for the first time, you may have some questions.  We have tried to answer some of the most common, however if there is anything else you would like to know, do not hesitate to speak to us before your treatment.  It may help to write down any questions you have and bring them with you.

Can I adjust myself?

No.  Adjustments should always be performed by a trained professional.  Chiropractors study for many years to understand how to safely adjust different parts of the body to their neutral position.   Chiropractors apply a specific amount of force to specific parts of the body, in specific directions; it is not possible to achieve this yourself.

You may hear “pops” and “clicks” in your back or neck for instance, similar to the sounds made with a chiropractic adjustment, however this does not mean that you have adjusted yourself.

Are chiropractic adjustments safe?

Yes, chiropractic adjustments are very safe if they are performed by a trained professional.  Chiropractors typically train for 4 years in the US.  Chiropractors take care in examining the patient before performing any adjustments to ensure they are not put in any undue harm.

Are adjustments painful?

Adjustments are not usually painful.  Patients may experience brief discomfort at the time of the adjustment, however they should not experience any pain afterwards.  Many people report that they feel better after a chiropractic adjustment.

Where does the “popping” sound come from?

The popping sound occurs from the fluid that lubricates your joints.  When an adjustment is made gas in and this lubricating fluid can shift and create a sound, like popping open a wine bottle.  This sound does not always occur and there is little evidence that an audible adjustment is any more effective than one without a sound. Some people gain a psychological benefit to hearing the popping sound of an adjustment as indication that they are “back to normal”.

How many adjustments will I need?

This depends significantly on your individual circumstances.  Some people may need just one adjustment, others may need regular adjustments for weeks, months or years to create long-lasting changes.

How long will the results last for?

This depends on what caused the problem that brought you to the chiropractor.  For some people results are long-term, for others they may be more short-term, this depends on the cause ultimately.

If the cause is not addressed and reoccurs then you may need further treatment.  For instance if you have poor posture and continue holding that posture after treatment, you may need another adjustment.

Is it safe to have chiropractic care after back surgery?

Potentially, if you have had minimally invasive surgery.  Chiropractic care can be safe after surgery, but it depends on the individual, You should speak to your physician about your own case.  As a general rule, if you are unsure you may want to wait 6 months after surgery.

Is it safe to have chiropractic care during pregnancy?

Yes, it is very widely accepted that chiropractic care is not only safe during pregnancy, but it can be beneficial for mother and baby.  Chiropractors are trained to treat patients who are pregnant and will cater their treatment to each individual.
